January 2, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a residential burglary which occurred at 7:04 p.m., December 30th at 800 E. Grand Avenue, Apartment 19-C. The resident returned from the store to find the front door ajar, and two suspects running out the back door of the apartment. Taken was two computer games.

The suspects, who were not located, are described as both being 18 year-old black males, 6' tall, 180 pounds, one wearing a Dallas Cowboys coat, and the other a red and black Bomber Jacket.


January 16, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a Dell computer stolen from Morris Library in mid December. The computer was stolen from a restricted-access receiving room and had just been unpacked. Only the CPU unit, valued at $1,500 was stolen. The serial number is on file. No force was used to gain entry to the area and there are no suspects.


January 29, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a Cisco Aironet Wireless Access piece of computer equipment that allows laptop computers to have wireless access to desktop and network computers. The item was stolen from a computer in a locked room in Rehn Hall within the past few weeks and is valued at $2,000. The serial number is on file. No force was used to gain entry to the area and there are no suspects.


February 5, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Robbery which occurred at 1:20 a.m., February 4th in the 600 block of South Poplar. The victim parked her car in the area and was walking to her residence when grabbed from behind by the suspect. The suspect demanded money, and was given $10 by the victim. The suspect fled on foot, and could not be located.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5'8", medium build, wearing a dark stocking cap, coat and pants.


February 12, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are attempting to identity the person(s) that set fire to a hallway bulletin board on the 17th floor of Schneider Hall during the early morning hours of Saturday, February 9. The fire activated the smoke alarm on that floor, alerting the police. Prior to their arrival, water from a nearby water cooler was used to extinguish the fire. Although damage was minimal, police and housing officials view this type of activity as potentially life threatening. Anyone with any information as to the person(s) responsible is encouraged to notify either the SIU Police Department or any Housing representative.


February 19, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating an Auto Burglary which occurred at 7:00 p.m., February 14 at 409 West Main Street. The victim approached her unlocked, parked car and noticed a male subject crouching next to her car. He quickly jumped up and fled westbound on a mountain bike. The victim looked in her car and noticed the in-dash stereo missing, along with 200 CD’s and a back pack.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5'11", 190 pounds, wearing a black stocking cap and a black jacket.


February 26, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police is investigating the theft of a Dell flat panel computer monitor stolen from an office in the Dunn Richmond Center. The monitor, valued at $1,100, was stolen between 5 p.m. on February 11 and 8:45 a.m. on February 12, 2002. No force was used to gain entry to the office, and police have no suspect(s).


March 13, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a valuable Menorah candelabra made of silver with gold inlay. The $8,000 piece was stolen while being displayed under a glass case in Faner Museum sometime between Tuesday, March 5 at 12:45 pm and Wednesday, March 6 at 8:30 am. An item was left in the display case in place of the Menorah. Police have no suspect(s) at this time.


March 21, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Robbery which occurred at 11:10 p.m., March 19 in the 600 blk. of E. Park. A cab driver reported he picked up two black males in the 2300 blk. of S. Illinois Avenue and drove them to E. Park. As the driver was making change, suspect #1 grabbed cash from the drivers hand and attempted to take a change container. The suspects then fled on foot. Suspect #1 is a black male, 5'11", 180 lbs, 20-25 years of age with short black hair and a moustache. He was wearing a red & white jacket and dark blue baggy pants. Suspect #2 is a black male, 4'11", 190 pounds, 20-25 wearing a dark jacket, a baseball cap and dark baggy pants.


March 27, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Home Invasion which occurred around 4:00 a.m., March 25th at 800 East Grand Avenue. The victim reported she awoke to find a male suspect in her bedroom demanding money. The suspect threatened to kill the victim and her roommate if they did not give him money. He left after obtaining one of the victim’s ATM cards, which he later used at Convenient Food Mart, 315 East Walnut. The victims were not injured, and the suspect could not be located by responding police officers.

The suspect is described as a black male with braided hair, 6'3", very thin build, 20-25 years old, last seen wearing a black, mid-thigh windbreaker, blue jeans, and dark shoes.


April 9, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the report of a purse-snatching that occurred north of the Communications Building near the bicycle rack around noon on March 26, 2002. A woman reported that as she bent to unlock her bicycle, a white male walking with a group of passing males reached out and took her purse. The victim described one of the males in the group as being a white male, blonde hair, wearing a blue University of Kentucky ballcap and a white baseball style jacket. SIUC Police are attempting to locate this male to determine whether he may have further information about the theft.


April 17, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a theft which occurred at 12:30 a.m., March 11th at Wal-Mart, 1450 East Main Street. Two white males, approximately 20 years old, removed numerous car stereos from the store, and jumped into a pickup truck being driven by a third suspect. The total loss of the stereos was in excess of $3,000.

The truck is described as white (rood and hood), with dark side panels and a two-tone tailgate, possibly a 70's or 80's Dodge, with dual headlights, chrome wheels and a bed liner. The truck is in very good condition.


April 25, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are attempting to identify two suspects that have repeatedly stolen or tried to steal items from users of Morris Library. Two persons have confronted the suspect(s) and recovered their belongings.

The witnesses provided slightly different descriptions:

  • Male, black, around 20 years old, 5’5, 130 lbs., big eyes, curly hair, white baggy T-Shirt, dark colored shorts, and
  • Male, black, dark complexion, around 20 years old, 5’6”, light colored shirt, dark baggy pants, and a yellow bandana worn on his head.
  • One of the suspects wears a large cross around his neck that is visible on the outside of his shirt.

SIUC Police have obtained a video photo and believe there are two suspects involved. The photo may be viewed on SIU Department of Public Safety’s website at http://www.dps.siu.edu/crimeprevention/CrimeP/Crime_of_the_Week/siucar_1.htm.

Items taken or attempted to be taken include backpacks, textbooks, a wallet, a cell phone, and were valued at $625.00.


May 2, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are attempting to identify three suspects that have entered unlocked dorm rooms in Schneider Hall to steal items. At least five dorm rooms have been entered during the night while the residents were asleep. Some of the victims awoke while the suspects were still in the room. Once the suspects saw the victims awake, they fled immediately.

The only descriptions provided were that on one occasion a black female was involved, and on another occasion two black males were seen pilfering through a desk.

Most of the thefts occurred during the night, between 10 p.m. April 23rd and 8 a.m., on April 24th, 2002. Items taken include $243 cash, one Samsung flip phone valued at $150, and one desk padlock.

Police are cautioning dorm residents to keep their doors locked at all times until the semester is over.


May 07, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating an Armed Robbery which occurred at 3:00 a.m. on May 3rd behind 429-B East Oak Street. The victim attempted to make a food delivery to 429-B E. Oak, but no one answered the door. As she left, she was approached by two male suspects, both armed with handguns. She was knocked down, and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from her.
One suspect is described as a black male, 5'9", stocky build, wearing a black do-rag, white shirt and black pants. The other suspect is described as a black male.


May 29, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a black IBM 390E laptop computer that was stolen from Morris Library just before noon on Sunday, May 19, 2002. Additional parts of the computer and other possessions were left untouched. The owner discovered the laptop missing when he returned from a 15-minute break. The value was estimated at $520. SIUC Police have other identifying information on file for the laptop, if needed. There are no suspects.


June 13, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are continuing to investigate an arson involving three large Plexiglas windows located on the east side of the north pedestrian overpass. The windows were set on fire around 6:37 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2002. The cost to replace the windows is estimated at $1,500. Police have no suspects at this time.


June 27, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating an indecent exposure complaint received Wednesday, June 26, 2002. The incident occurred at 8:30 a.m. near the sculptures between Morris Library and the Pulliam Breezeway. The suspect is described as a:

Male Black
22-25 years of age
5’10”, muscular build
Dark complexion
Shaved head
Wearing gray sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt

SIUC Police are requesting assistance in identifying this person.


July 2, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Robbery at Corner Express, 600 East Grand Avenue, that occurred on June 27th at 9:00 p.m. An unknown suspect entered the store and demanded money from the clerk. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken by the suspect, and he fled eastbound on foot. No weapon was displayed.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5'11", 180 pounds, in his late twenties, with short, black hair, thin face, and a broad forehead.


July 9, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a Dell Optiplex GS110 computer from the Faner Computer Lab. The computer was stolen sometime between Wednesday morning, July 3rd, and Friday morning, July 5th, 2002. The value of the loss has not been determined yet. Police have no suspects.


July 23, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a ladies purse from a classroom in Faner Hall on Friday, July 12, 2002, around 2 p.m. The victim had placed her purse under a desk in front of her and forgot to remove it after class. She returned approximately 8 minutes later, but the purse was missing. Inside the black vinyl purse were various types of identification, one gold and silver angel charm, one gold amethyst and diamond ladies ring, and one set of gold and diamond earrings. All items were valued in excess of $1,055.


July 31, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating two Burglaries which occurred in the past week in the Northwest part of town. Southern Imports, 550 North University Avenue, was burglarized between 6 p.m. on July 25th and 6:30 a.m. on the 26th. An unknown person(s) entered the store by breaking a window, and took an undetermined amount of cash.

On July 31st around 2:50 a.m., police were notified of a burglary in progress at Associated Lumber, 300 W. Willow. Entry to the business had been gained by breaking a window. Possible suspects in this case are three black males who were seen in the area. One of the suspects was approximately 5'9" tall and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The amount of loss and damage is unknown at this time.


August 16, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating Auto Burglaries which occurred between 9:45 p.m. on August 13 and 5:45 a.m. on August 14 at Vogler Ford, 1170 East Main. Unknown person(s) broke windows to gain entry into eight vehicles, and removed the driver and passenger air bags. Damage and loss is estimated in excess of $10,000.


August 23, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of a personal Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop computer from a student while studying at Morris Library. The computer was stolen on Friday, August 9, at approximately 3:40 p.m. Police are seeking a suspect described as a:

Male, black, age approximately 20, 5’07”, 150 pounds, black short hair, wearing a white shirt, black pants, and carrying a black backpack with a white stripe.

The suspect left the area by running out the south doors. The computer is valued at $1,600, and the serial number is on file at SIUPD.


August 28, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating three forcible burglaries to offices on campus that occurred between Wednesday, August 21 and Saturday, August 24.

Ten lockers in a room on the third floor of Pulliam Hall were forcibly entered by cutting the locks. Stolen was a 27” Magnavox television and a Sylvania VCR.

Seven offices in Faner Hall were forcibly entered. A black leather pouch containing tools was stolen.

Seven offices and nine lockers were forcibly entered in Doyle Hall (Old Baptist Foundation). Stolen were several musical instruments, including three flutes (Emerson Alto, Emerson Bass, Haynes C); three saxophones and one mouthpiece (1954 Selmer Mark VI Tenor; Selmer Series II Alto; Selmer Mark VI Alto); and two clarinets (Yamaha YCL20). Also stolen was one stereo system (receiver, cd player, cassette player, and two speakers).

Value of all items has not been established at this point. Serial numbers are on file at SIU Police for the musical instruments.


September 3, 2002 Carbondale

The Carbondale Police Department is investigating an Attempted Murder which occurred on August 30, 2002, around 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of East Willow Street. Two 22 year-old males reported they were walking in the 400 block of East Willow Street and were shot by unknown person(s). One was struck in the right forearm, and the other in the right elbow area. Both were transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and treated for their injuries.
No suspects exist at this time.


September 25, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating several forcible auto burglaries that occurred on east campus between Tuesday, September 17 and Saturday, September 22. At least three cars were broken into and items were stolen from each, including:

One Clarion stereo CD player, silver, and approximately 300 cd’s in a yellow case, valued at $4,800. The car was parked at E. Mill and S. Washington, and was broken into Wednesday afternoon.

One JVC car CD stereo, black, and one black canvas cd case containing 30 cd’s, all valued at $547. The car was parked at E. Mill and S. Washington and was broken into Saturday evening.

One Sony car CD stereo, silver, valued at $300. The car was parked on S. Wall Street.


October 3, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a series of Auto Burglaries which occurred between September 26 and October 2, 2002 at various locations around town. Many of them occurred at auto repair businesses, and in most cases the in-dash car stereo was the target. Entry to the vehicles was gained in most cases by the suspect(s) breaking out a window.


October 9, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating a residential burglary that occurred in the Mae Smith residential hall over the weekend of September 20th to 23rd, 2002. Stolen from the victim’s room was a Dell Inspiron 2500 hard case laptop computer and silver mouse valued at $1,406.00. No force was used to enter the room and police have no suspects. The serial number is on file at SIUC Department of Public Safety.


October 24, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating a number of auto burglaries that occurred in Lot 106 located on South Wall Street, between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, and 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2002. In addition, several other vehicles have been broken into or extensively damaged in parking lots near the east side residential dorms during the past two weeks.

Last night, seven cars had the drivers or passenger’s windows broken out, the stereos removed, and a few other items stolen, such as a dozen cd’s, a phone charger, and a black light. Brand names of the car stereos stolen are:

JVC Camillion CD player
AIWA CD player
Rampage CD player
Kenwood CD player
Pioneer CD player w/tuner

No value has been determined yet for the total loss. SIU Police have no suspect(s) at this time.


November 7, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the intentional criminal damage to the Industrial Education Building that occurred overnight on Wednesday, October 25, 2002. The following Thursday morning students arriving to work on class projects found that someone had used a push-cart to break out two glass door panels to gain entry, and had vandalized the interior of the building by stopping the drains in two restrooms sinks, leaving the water on to flood the building. SIU Police have no suspect(s) and the extent of the loss has not been determined at this time.


November 12, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Residential Burglary that occurred between October 31 at 9:00 p.m. and November 4 at 4 a.m. at 407 South Forest. Unknown person(s) entered the residence through a sliding glass door and stole a number of items including:

Boss sound system
Fostex speakers
Phillips DVD player
Minolta 35 mm camera
Sony video camera
Tuscan 4 track recorder
Bose speaker
Diditech guitar processor
SKS rifle
$170 currency

Loss is estimated in excess of $3,000.


November 22, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating an incident of criminal trespass to residence/disorderly conduct after a female resident of Mae Smith residence hall reported to police that she awoke from a nap to see a black male subject wearing a hooded coat or sweatshirt standing near the foot of her bed watching her around 5 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2002. The person left without harming her.

SIU Police have no further description of the suspect, and request that any similar incidents be reported immediately.


December 5, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the theft of four backpacks from Morris Library. Three of the thefts occurred on the 3rd floor, and the other on the 1st floor. Two thefts occurred during the afternoon, and two occurred during the early evening hours, all between Wednesday, November 11, and Sunday, December 1, 2002.

Three of the backpacks were recovered later inside the library; however, some of the contents were stolen. Items missing are bank cash cards, textbooks, cash, and a Sony Discman, with a total value of $750.

SIU Police have no description of a suspect, and are cautioning library users not to leave their property unattended for any amount of time.


December 18, 2002 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating the burglary and criminal damage to seven vehicles at Evergreen Terrace that occurred this morning, Wednesday, December 18, 2002. The vehicles had the windows broken out to gain entry, and several had their interiors damaged. A full account of the damage and loss is still being determined.


December 26, 2002 Carbondale

Carbondale Police are investigating a Residential Burglary that occurred on December 23 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. at 203 South Marion Street. Unknown person(s) entered the residence by breaking a window and stole a number of items including a VCR, DVD player and coins.
