SIUC Police is investigating two incidents of Criminal Damage to Vehicle that occurred in a parking lot near the Arena while the Carbondale Holiday Tournament was in session. s Sometime between 10 p.m. on December 31st and 2 a.m. on January 1st in Lot 13A north of the Arena, the owner of a Honda reported the rear window of his Honda had been smashed. Nearby officers found the windshield of a truck owned by SIUC with similar damage, along with several overturned trashcans. Damage is estimated to be in excess of $300. Police have no suspect(s) at this time. January 29, 2004 Carbondale The Carbondale Police Department is investigating an armed robbery which occurred on January 23 at 8:30 p.m. at Union Planters Bank ATM, 500 West Main Street. The victim was on foot using the ATM when approached by the suspect who was displaying a knife described as 8-10" long. The victim fled on foot without incident, and returned a short time later to find his ATM card gone. The suspect is described as a black male, 5'11", 175 lbs., 30 years old, last seen wearing a black hat, dark brown coat, and black hooded sweatshirt. February 27, 2004CarbondaleThe Carbondale Police Department is investigating a robbery which occurred on February 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Currency Exchange, 606 South Illinois Avenue. The victim was approached by the suspect who grabbed a bank bag containing an undisclosed amount of currency. The suspect fled on foot, last known to be running in the 400 block of South Washington. Police are investigating the theft of a student’s original
art print taken from a display wall in Allyn Building’s Vergette
Gallery. An instructor put up a display of various students work on
a Sunday evening. On Tuesday, February 24, 2004, between 2 p.m. and
3:15 p.m. the print was stolen. A description of the artwork is as follows: April 20, 2004 SIUCSIUC Police is investigating the aggravated battery of a student who was shot several times with a BB gun from a passing car around 3:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2004. The shooting took place between Mae Smith Circle and Grinnell Hall as the student was walking through the area. After
the shooting, the car drove to Schneider Circle and dropped off two
occupants. The student caught up with one of these subjects, who threatened
and then punched the student in the head. SIUC Police are asking any witnesses to contact the police department if they saw or heard anything, or to call Carbondale Crime Stoppers. May 20, 2004 SIUCSIUC Police are seeking witnesses to an aggravated battery that left three SIU students injured on Thursday, May 6, 2004, at 2:38 a.m. in the “Munchie Man” line at Schneider Circle. Police responded to a fight that broke out between patrons over a “cutting the line” incident. Bystanders stated a large fight broke out after two black males attempted to cut into the line and were confronted by some of the patrons. Three students received minor to severe facial injuries after being hit and kicked in the face. All were treated and released at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Some of the black male suspects fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Lumina, while the others fled on foot. Witnesses stated that they had seen some of the suspects before in the area, but could not identify them by name. SIUC Police have been unable to identify any of the suspects so far and are asking any witnesses or bystanders to call if they can provide any further description or information. JuneJuly 14, 2004 SIUCSIUC Police are investigating an attempted computer fraud case that was reported on Friday, July 2, 2004 at approximately 4:20 p.m. A student reported receiving an email on an office computer from someone purporting themselves to be from Citibank Corporation requesting “confirmation” information about the student’s credit card. The email threatened to block access to the student’s Citibank account if the questions were not answered. The email directed the student to a website that was set up as a Citibank site. Information requested was:
Although the reporting party did not respond to the email with any personal information, the student did contact Citibank who advised that the email solicitation was not made by Citibank. SIUC Police are cautioning campus personnel to be alert to this type of online fraud. Solicitations for personal banking and/or credit card information should be reported to the police. July 21, 2004 SIUC SIUC Police are investigating an attempted purse snatching that occurred between Morris Library and Faner Hall on Monday, July 12, 2004, at 10:20 p.m. The victim reported that as she walked on the sidewalk south of the Library toward Faner Hall, a male grabbed her purse from behind. The victim was able to retain grasp of her purse and fought off the suspect. The suspect ran eastbound toward Shryock Auditorium. The suspect was described as a male, unknown race (due to the darkness of the area), approximately 6’ to 6’1”, thin build, wearing a baseball cap and dark colored sweatpants. There was no monetary loss; however, the victim received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. August 23, 2004 CarbondaleThe Carbondale Police Department is investigating residential burglary which occurred between August 17th at 11:20 pm. and August 18th at 12:09 am. at 410 W Freeman. August 30 , 2004 SIUC SIUC Police Department is investigating the Theft of a Motor Vehicle that occurred between noon and 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. A red 1992 Ford 150 pickup truck bearing Illinois license plates ‘2 MONTE’ was stolen from Lot 53, the employee parking lot between the Physical Plant and the Arena. The owner reported that the truck’s passenger door is dented; the radio and an interior door handle are missing; and the bed of the truck contained a Huskavarna chainsaw and a new glider swing still in the box. The total loss is over $2,300. Police have no suspects at this time. The Carbondale Police Department is investigating an Attempted Robbery which occurred on September 7th 2004 at 11:00pm. at the ATM located at Old National Bank (509 S. University) in Carbondale. The victim was punched one time, by each of the two suspects, after withdrawing money from the ATM Machine. The victim fought off the attack and ran from the area. Both suspects were described black males about 22 years old. The victim thought a third suspect was nearby. September 28, 2004 SIUCSIUC Police Department is assisting with the investigation of a stolen vehicle and arson reported to Carbondale Police Department on September 23, 2004 at 10:53 a.m. and found on SIU property near Pleasant Hill Road at 7:05 p.m. The vehicle had been completely burned to the ground. The vehicle is described as a black 1995 Chrysler Sebring bearing Illinois license 1347688. The car was found in a field on the north side of Pleasant Hill Road west of Union Hill Road. The area is usually kept closed with a gate; however, the gate was open at the time the car was located. No one was in or near the car when it was discovered. October 13, 2004 SIUCBoth SIUC and Carbondale Police Departments are investigating more than 25 cars that were vandalized both on and off campus during the early morning hours of Monday, October 11, 2004, between 3:45 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. SIUC Police responded to Lot 62 which is located south of Wright Hall, and to Lot 26 in Southern Hills for complaints of vandalism to 22 vehicles. At the same time, Carbondale Police were investigating vandalism to five vehicles at Lewis Park, 800 East Grand Avenue. The damage to the vehicles on campus included 88 punctured tires, 79 smashed windows, two convertible/soft-top roofs slashed, 4 mirrors broken, and five fenders or tailgates scratched. Carbondale Police reported similar damage at the Lewis Park location to those five vehicles. SIUC Police have recovered some evidence from the scene, but are requesting any persons that may have seen or heard anything in either of those areas during the early morning hours to call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line. Police do not have an estimate of the amount of the damage at this time. October 18, 2004 CPD The Carbondale Police Department is investigating an Arson which occurred on October 16th 2004 at 2:03 a.m. at the Sunset Motel (825 E Main #18 in Carbondale). A witness reports a black male threw something on the door of room #18 then set it on fire. The male was described as short with a medium build, wearing a brown wide rimmed hat, brown jacket and dark colored pants. He was last seen running east from the area. The room was occupied at the time but there were no injuries. October 29, 2004 SIU SIUC Police Department is investigating the theft of a large, oversized SIU flag from the football stadium flagpole on September 16, 2004, between 3 a.m. and 0459 a.m. The rope on the flag pole was found cut, the U.S. flag was left lying on the ground, and the SIU flag had been stolen. The missing SIUC flag is described as having white background with maroon lettering (the new Athletics style logo) on it. The value of the loss has not been determined at this time. November 15, 2004 CarbondaleThe City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a report of Theft and Criminal Damage to Property on November, 8th 2004 at 3:33 a.m. at Brad the Furniture King (2075 Sweets Drive in Carbondale). A witness reports seeing three males running from the east side of the furniture store. Responding Officers found two soda vending machines were entered and the money stolen. There was extensive damage to the vending machines and an unknown amount of money removed. Some evidence was collected. November 22, 2004, Carbondale The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a report of 11 Criminal Damage to Vehicles on November, 16th 2004 between the hours of at 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 am. The reports were in the 2100 and 2000 blocks of W. Woodriver Drive, 1700 and 1800 blocks of W. Freeman Street, 700 block E Park Street and the 1100 block of E Walnut Street. The damage consisted of slashed tires and broken windows. One report was a motorcycle which was knocked over. December
