January 27, 2005 Carbondale

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating an Aggravated Battery report to a City of Carbondale Firefighter. On 01-22-05 at about 2:40 am. Carbondale Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at 900 E Grand Building #1. Unknown persons threw fireworks down onto the firefighters at the scene. One of the fireworks exploded near the head of one of the firefighters causing injury to his ear.

March 16, 2005

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a Residential Burglary which occurred between 3:00 a.m. on Friday, 03-04-05, and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, 03-06-05, at 612 W. Cherry Street in Carbondale.

An unknown person or persons entered the residence through a window and stole a large safe containing several handguns. Some evidence was collected.

March 28 ,2005

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a Residential Burglary which occurred between 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, and  8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at 615 W. Rigdon Street in Carbondale.

An unknown person or persons forced entry to the residence through a door and stole a various tools and a washer/dryer. Total loss is over $3000.00. Some evidence was collected.


April 5, 2005 SIUC

SIUC Police are investigating a report of Criminal Damage to Property to one of the new Emergency Call Boxes that was recently installed on the North Pedestrian Overpass (east side). The damage was discovered on Monday, April 4, 2005 , at approximately 10 a.m.

Unknown person(s) smashed the lower unit of the yellow call box and stole the speaker system. The damage was extensive, resulting in the need to replace the entire lower unit at a cost of approximately $1,000.

Four new Emergency Call Boxes were recently placed on both pedestrian overpasses to enhance pedestrian safety. Police have no suspect information.

April 20, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are seeking the public’s help in identifying two suspects sought in connection with an aggravated battery that occurred April 3 in an elevator in Mae Smith Hall. The incident happened at about 4:08 a.m. inside the elevator on the 13th floor of the residence hall.

The victim, a 19-year-old SIUC student who lives in the residence hall, told police he entered the elevator on the 14th floor to go to the lobby. The two suspects entered the elevator behind him, and asked the victim to press the button for the 13th floor. The victim told police he was attacked after he made a comment about the two men using the stairs instead of the elevator to go down one floor.

The victim was hit in the head and upper body. The suspects ran from the elevator on the 13th floor, and a short time later were seen running out the front doors of the residence hall. The victim continued on the elevator to the lobby, where he reported the attack, and police were notified. The victim did not require medical treatment.

The suspects are each described as white males, 19-21 years old, 6 feet, and 180 pounds. One suspect has brown hair and was wearing a dark-striped button shirt and blue jeans. The other suspect has light brown hair, with a red-colored striped button shirt and blue jeans. It is not know if the suspects live in the residence hall or if they are SIUC students.


May 4, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are investigating a report of an aggravated battery to a student walking on the footbridge near Mae Smith Hall on April 23, 2005 , at midnight .

A student reported that as he was walking he was approached by two black males who asked for money. When the victim replied that he did not have any and walked past, he was tackled from behind by the two black males. After a brief fight, the victim was able to escape. The victim had visible bruises and abrasions to his forehead.

The suspects are described as:

Male black, 6’, 180 lbs. short black hair, wearing a white head band, short sleeve shirt and jeans.

As the victim did not have any money with him, there was no monetary loss. The victim declined medical attention.

May 10, 2005 Carbondale

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a robbery which occurred at about 9:50 a.m. on Sunday May 1, 2005.

The driver of a Yellow Cab taxi was in the 400 block of N. Brush Street, in Carbondale when the suspect (passenger) grabbed a bag containing cash, belonging to the cab company. The suspect damaged property inside the cab and threatened the driver before fleeing the area.

The suspect is described as a medium complected 35 year old black female 5'08", 250 pounds with short black hair.

May 23, 2005 Carbondale

The Carbondale Police Department is investigating a robbery which occurred on Sunday May 22, 2005 at about 11:50 p.m. at Taco Bell located at 412 E Walnut in Carbondale.

The suspect walked up to the drive through window, pointed an unknown object from inside his jacket and told the cashier "This is a stick up." The suspect took an undetermined amount of cash and fled the area on foot heading south. Some evidence was collected.

The suspect is described as a 30 year old skinny black male, with sunglasses on his head, wearing a gray, zippered, hooded sweat shirt.


June 2, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale Police are investigating a burglary to the interior offices of the Rehabilitation Institute at Rehn Hall that occurred during the Memorial Day weekend, 2005. Employees returning to work on Tuesday morning found two doors forcibly pried open.

Stolen items include a Dell Latitude C840 DE Computer laptop valued at $2,300; a Sony Hi-8 Camcorder, Model CCD-TRV308 valued at $350, and the cables and cords to operate the items.

Police have no suspects at this time.

June 14, 2005 SIUC ARRESTED / PROPERTY PARTIALLY RECOVERED

Southern Illinois University Police Department is investigating the theft of a utility trailer loaded with copper wire and other items that were taken over the weekend of June 10-13, 2005 , from University Hall. Employees reported that a green utility trailer with a wire cage top (SIU Vehicle #776) loaded with scrap copper was stolen over the weekend along with several old water heaters, used plumbing pipe, and two stainless steel sinks. The utility trailer was valued at $1,600 and the copper wire at $1,500. No value was available at this time for the sinks; the pipe was trash.

Two men were reported inquiring about the items shortly before their disappearance, and police are seeking information as to their identity. The subjects and their vehicle description are as follows:

One older white male and one younger black male in an older white truck

June 28, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Police Department officers are investigating the burglary of a locked tool trailer that was parked in a locked fenced area belonging to SIUC on McLafferty Road. The owner reported the burglary Monday morning, June 20, 2005.

Partial descriptions of the stolen items are:

  • Stihl Demo Saw, Model TS400
  • Hilti Hammer Drill, Model TE14
  • Hilti Hammer Drill, Model TE75
  • Hilti Hammer Drill, Model TM7SVSR
  • Porter Cable Saw
  • 12” diamond blade for TS400 saw
  • Cutquik cutoff saw
  • Scaling Chisel
  • Numerous bits for TE75 and TE14 drills

The value of the stolen tools is in excess of $6,000. Serial numbers are available at SIUC Police.


July 14, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale Police are continuing the investigation of a burglary to the interior offices of the Rehabilitation Institute at Rehn Hall that occurred during the Memorial Day weekend, 2005. Employees returning to work after the weekend found two doors forcibly pried open.

Police have developed some leads, but are seeking assistance from any person who may have additional information.

July 18, 2005 Carbondale

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a robbery which occurred on Thursday July 14, 2005 at about 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot at S. Renfro Street and W. College Street, in Carbondale.

The victim was walking to his vehicle when he noticed 5 black males walking in his direction. One of the black males approached the victim and struck him, knocking him to the ground. The suspect continued to hit the victim while he was lying on the ground. The suspect took the victim’s money, then rejoined the group of black males. The suspect was last seen walking north toward Old National Bank.

The suspect is described as a 19 year old black male, 6'3", about 150 pounds wearing a long black T-shirt and black shorts.

September 1, 2005

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating a burglary which occurred on Tuesday August 30, 2005 between 3:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. at Taco Bell located at 1410 E Main in Carbondale.

Entry was made by breaking a window and a undetermined amount of cash was taken.  Some evidence was collected.

September 19, 2005

The City of Carbondale Police Department is investigating an armed robbery at Pizza Hut located at 613 E Main in Carbondale, which occurred on Tuesday September 13, 2005 at about 11:30 p.m..

An employee exited the east door and was approached by the suspect, who pointed a black colored semi-automatic handgun and demanded entry to the restaurant. Once inside the suspect stole an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect left the restaurant in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20's, 6'02" tall and weighed about 205 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a black stocking cap, a black bandana over his face, a navy blue shirt and blue jean pants.

Some evidence was collected.

September 26, 2005 SIUC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are investigating an armed robbery/home invasion that occurred at about 3:00 p.m. , Monday, September 19, 2005 , in Schneider Hall.

Two male SIUC students told police they were in a residence hall room when the suspect entered the room, identified himself as a police officer, and displayed a black handgun and a badge. The suspect ordered the two students, ages 19 and 21, into the bathroom and closed the door. The suspect then took the two students’ wallets and left the room.

The students remained in the bathroom for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until the 19-year-old student’s roommate cam home and found them in the bathroom. Both students live in Schneider Hall.

The suspect is described as

  • an African American male,
  • approximately 25 years old,
  • 6 feet, 1 inch tall,
  • approximately 180 pounds
  • with a thin build and dark skin tone.
  • He was wearing a white polo-style shirt with a circular emblem on the left chest,
  • black pants,
  • black shoes
  • and aviator-style sunglasses
  • was carrying a black handgun and badge.

October 11, 2005 SIUC

SIUC Department of Public Safety police officers are investigating an Aggravated Arson to an elevator in University Hall, 1101 S. Wall Street , on Sunday evening, October 2, 2005 , at 8:50 p.m.

Unknown person(s) set the plastic ceiling grate on fire. When the elevator returned to the lobby, Residence Hall Staff discovered burning plastic dripping from the ceiling. Staff members were able to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. Fire and Police were summoned.

No evidence was left at the scene and no suspects were developed. Damage estimates are unknown at this time.

October 26, 2005

SIUC Department of Public Safety police officers are investigating the theft of personal possessions from the men’s locker room at the Student Recreation Center on Friday, October 21, 2005 between 7 and 8 p.m.

The victim reported that upon returning to his locker, he discovered that his backpack and clothing had been stolen from the locker. The victim located the backpack and clothing near the back of the locker room; however, the following items had been stolen from the backpack: a gray Verizon flip phone, Roca blue jeans, neck key holder with keys, and a temporary Recreation Center access card. The items were valued at over $130. Police have no suspects at this time.


November 17, 2005 SIU

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are investigating an aggravated battery/attempted strong-arm robbery that occurred at 2:56 a.m. Sunday, November 13, 2005, in parking lot 106 off of South Wall Street.

The 19-year-old student victim told authorities that three African-American males approached him and asked for money. When he responded that he had none, one of the suspects struck the victim, knocking him to the ground. One of the suspects then kicked the victim and again demanded money. The three suspects then fled the area.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was treated and released.

The only description the victim could provide was that one of his attackers was wearing a white T-shirt.


December 20, 2005

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 2:02 a.m., Friday, Dec. 16, underneath the pedestrian overpass near Neely Hall.

A 20-year-old SIUC student told police he was walking when a car pulled into a space in parking Lot 14 on the west side of Neely Hall. The victim said three suspects exited the car, approached him, and asked for directions to a local club.

One of the three suspects told the victim to drop his wallet, and exposed the handle of what the victim believed was a pistol tucked in his belt. The suspect with the gun picked the wallet up from the ground, took the money, and returned the wallet to the victim. The suspects returned to the car and drove north through the parking lot onto Washington Street.

The victim was not injured.

The victim described the first suspect, who had the gun, as possibly Hispanic, shorter than 6 feet tall, with facial hair. He was wearing baggy clothing. The second suspect is a white male, shorter than 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, wearing baggy clothing and a gray hooded sweatshirt, with chin-length curly hair. The third suspect, of unknown race, is 6 feet tall, with dark hair, baggy clothes and a black hooded sweatshirt.

The suspect’s car is a dark-colored, four-door Pontiac.
