What is Crime Stoppers?

Carbondale Crime Stoppers is a community program that involves the public, media, Carbondale Police Department and the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Police Department in the fight against crime. It provides a unique way for information to flow from citizens to the police without having to give your name, address, or telephone number. Additionally, Carbondale Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of an offender.

How Does Crime Stoppers Work?

Carbondale Crime Stoppers maintains an easy number to remember, 549-COPS. It is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by members of the Carbondale and SIUC Police Departments. When you call with information, you will be given a code number known ONLY to you. When you call back to check on the progress of your case, you need only to identify yourself by your code number. If your information results in the arrest of an offender, you become eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Or, you can e-mail a tip on the interactive on-line anonymous tip program by clicking on this link:

Arrangements will be made so that you can receive your reward in cash and protect your identity.

Who Administers Crime Stoppers?

The Crime Stoppers program has a Board of Directors made up of concerned citizens who are responsible for establishing policy, raising funds, and paying rewards. The Board meets monthly to vote on rewards to be paid and to discuss matters concerning the operation of Crime Stoppers.

If you would like to volunteer to be a Crime Stoppers Board Member, please contact Carbondale Police Officer Randy Mathis at 457-3200, extension 428.

Media Involvement

In order to publicize the Crime Stoppers program and maintain a high profile in the community, a specific unsolved crime is featured as the “Crime of the Week”. This crime appears in local newspapers and is aired on radio. The media, by its cooperation, enables Crime Stoppers to be a dynamic and highly visible organization. Their efforts are vital to the success of the program. Crime Stoppers does not pay for air time or newspaper space. All the production expenses and costs are absorbed by the cooperating media organizations.
